Hike Report: Mt. Lukens
David and I got a bit more ambitious today: 5074-foot Mt. Lukens. Where we started hiking, the elevation was (and still is) 2300 feet, which meant that we had some serious uphill climbing.
It was a warm day, with weather in the L.A. area near 80. Views on the way up were outstanding. In this picture, you can see the Verdugo Mountains in the foreground and Mt. Cahuenga just beyond it. In the distance is Santa Monica Bay, and Catalina Island at the top left.
We got all excited when we came around a bend into a shady area and saw a small patch of snow...

Once when I lived in New Mexico I hiked up into the mountains in southern Colorado in mid-July. It was odd to see columbine (the flower) blooming right alongside the towering remnants of a snow drift.
